# Japan retail financial-distribution matrix

## Purpose

This page compares four Japanese retail-linked finance configurations using current public evidence:

- AEON;
- Seven & i / Seven Bank;
- FamilyMart / ITOCHU; and
- Lawson / KDDI / Mitsubishi Corporation.

The comparison is about entity boundaries and distribution channels, not a ranking of scale, profitability, customer value, or strategic quality. Dynamic counts and hypothetical scenarios have been removed.

Route from retail INDEX. The detailed pages are AEON, Seven & i / Seven Bank, FamilyMart / ITOCHU, and Lawson / KDDI.

## Current ownership and control

Sources for the following table: [AEON Financial Service overview](https://www.aeonfinancial.co.jp/en/corp/about/), [Seven Bank's 2026 shareholder list](https://www.sevenbank.co.jp/english/ir/stock/stock_info.html), [ITOCHU's FamilyMart tie-up release](https://www.itochu.co.jp/en/news/press/2021/210316_2.html), and [KDDI's final Lawson ownership notice](https://news.kddi.com/kddi/corporate/english/ir-news/2024/08/20/pdf/press_20240820.pdf).

| Retail configuration | Current structural center | Documented ownership boundary |
|---|---|---|
| AEON | AEON Co. group plus listed AEON Financial Service and AEON Bank | AEON Financial Service is responsible for the group's financial-services business; product entities and permissions remain separate |
| Seven & i / Seven Bank | Seven Bank and its finance subsidiaries connected to Seven & i through an equity-method relationship | Seven Bank is no longer a Seven & i consolidated subsidiary; Seven-Eleven Japan held 33.38% and ITOCHU 20.41% in the 2026-03-31 shareholder snapshot |
| FamilyMart / ITOCHU | Privately held FamilyMart controlled through the ITOCHU structure, with disclosed minority JA Group stakes | FamilyMart has no documented captive bank; payment, card, and ATM partners must be identified separately |
| Lawson / KDDI / Mitsubishi Corporation | Privately held Lawson jointly operated after its 2024 take-private | KDDI and Mitsubishi Corporation each hold 50% of Lawson voting rights |

The Seven Bank row is date-sensitive. Its current shareholder list must replace older figures such as 46.44% or 39.92%.

## Physical distribution and banking layer

Sources for the following table: [AEON Financial Service domestic operations](https://www.aeonfinancial.co.jp/en/corp/enterprise/), [Seven Bank's operating overview](https://www.sevenbank.co.jp/english/corp/company/business.html), [FamilyMart's Famima ATM launch](https://www.family.co.jp/company/news_releases/2026/20260601_01.html), and [Lawson Bank](https://www.lawsonbank.jp/).

| Configuration | Physical finance touchpoint | Bank / infrastructure provider | Correct boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| AEON | Shopping-center bank branches, insurance shops, ATMs, and retail POS | AEON Bank and other AEON Financial Service entities | Full bank, agency, card, insurance, and prepaid functions are not one license |
| Seven & i / Seven Bank | Seven Bank ATMs at 7-Eleven and many non-group locations | Seven Bank | ATM network is the bank's platform; the retail parent no longer consolidates the bank |
| FamilyMart / ITOCHU | Famima ATM rollout, store register, and app | Seven Bank operates Famima ATM infrastructure | A FamilyMart-branded ATM is not a FamilyMart banking license |
| Lawson / KDDI / Mitsubishi | Lawson Bank ATMs, POS, Loppi, and store services | Lawson Bank for banking; other providers for accepted products | KDDI banking or card products remain KDDI-side products |

Seven Bank's role now crosses old retail-group boundaries: it remains closely connected to Seven & i, ITOCHU holds a major stake, and Seven Bank began supplying Famima ATM infrastructure in 2026.

## Payment, card, and loyalty layers

Sources for the following table: [AEON Financial Service domestic operations](https://www.aeonfinancial.co.jp/en/corp/enterprise/), [Seven Card Service](https://www.7card.co.jp/company/bs/), [FamilyMart's payment directory](https://www.family.co.jp/services/payment.html), and [Lawson's point-card directory](https://www.lawson.co.jp/ponta/).

| Configuration | Group-linked payment / card | Loyalty or identification surface | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| AEON | AEON Card, WAON, AEON Pay | WAON POINT and AEON app / card relationships | Verify issuer, merchant, product, and date for each benefit |
| Seven & i / Seven Bank | Seven Card / Seven Card Plus and nanaco through Seven Card Service | nanaco and 7iD are related but contractually distinct | Seven Card Service is a Seven Bank subsidiary |
| FamilyMart / ITOCHU | FamiPay through Famima Digital One and Famima Card with Pocket Card | FamiPay benefits plus accepted d Point, Rakuten Point, and V Point | Multi-point acceptance does not mean the programs are owned by FamilyMart |
| Lawson / KDDI / Mitsubishi | Lawson accepts au PAY and other payment methods; Lawson Bank provides ATM services | Lawson currently presents both Ponta and d Point | au PAY and au PAY Card are not Lawson-issued; Ponta is not exclusive at Lawson |

## Entity × product × channel matrix

Sources for the following table: the current company and product pages linked above, [Seven Bank's subsidiary list](https://www.sevenbank.co.jp/english/corp/company/outline.html), and [Famima Digital One's creation announcement](https://www.family.co.jp/company/news_releases/2019/20190701_01.html).

| Product or function | AEON | Seven & i / Seven Bank | FamilyMart / ITOCHU | Lawson / KDDI / Mitsubishi |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Licensed bank in the named retail configuration | AEON Bank | Seven Bank | None documented as a FamilyMart subsidiary | Lawson Bank |
| Card layer | AEON Card | Seven Card Service | Famima Card with Pocket Card | KDDI-side au PAY Card may be accepted or distributed under separate arrangements |
| Electronic money / app wallet | WAON and AEON Pay | nanaco | FamiPay | au PAY is KDDI-side; Lawson accepts multiple methods |
| ATM provider at the main retail channel | AEON Bank and partners | Seven Bank | Seven Bank under Famima ATM agreement | Lawson Bank |
| Point relationship | WAON POINT | nanaco point and retail membership links | FamiPay benefits plus multiple accepted common points | Ponta and d Point currently accepted |
| Insurance distribution | AEON Insurance Service agency and bank channels | Product-specific; not the core retail comparison here | Future or partner products require separate evidence | KDDI partnership listed insurance as an area for consideration |

## Own, partner, or accept

“Available at the store” can represent three different relationships. Conflating them produces most retail-finance mapping errors.

Sources for the following classification table: [AEON Financial Service overview](https://www.aeonfinancial.co.jp/en/corp/about/), [Seven Bank's subsidiary list](https://www.sevenbank.co.jp/english/corp/company/outline.html), [FamilyMart's Famima ATM announcement](https://www.family.co.jp/company/news_releases/2026/20260601_01.html), and [KDDI's Lawson partnership announcement](https://newsroom.kddi.com/english/news/detail/kddi_pr_secret-79.html).

| Relationship | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Own / consolidate | The entity is a subsidiary in the reporting group | Seven Bank owns Seven Card Service and Seven Payment Service |
| Equity-method relationship | Material influence without full consolidation | Seven Bank's current relationship with Seven & i and ITOCHU |
| Partner / distribute | A separate provider's product uses the retail channel | Seven Bank operates Famima ATM; KDDI services may be distributed through Lawson |
| Accept at POS | The store accepts a payment or point credential | FamilyMart accepts several code payments and common points; Lawson presents both Ponta and d Point |
| Plan / consider | A company has announced an intention or example | FamilyMart considered bank-agency permission; Lawson partnership listed possible bank and insurance distribution |

## Evidence-backed differences

Sources for the following table: [AEON Financial Service overview](https://www.aeonfinancial.co.jp/en/corp/about/), [Seven Bank's operating overview](https://www.sevenbank.co.jp/english/corp/company/business.html), [FamilyMart's Famima ATM launch](https://www.family.co.jp/company/news_releases/2026/20260601_01.html), and [KDDI's final Lawson ownership notice](https://news.kddi.com/kddi/corporate/english/ir-news/2024/08/20/pdf/press_20240820.pdf).

| Dimension | AEON | Seven & i / Seven Bank | FamilyMart / ITOCHU | Lawson / KDDI / Mitsubishi |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Core physical setting | Mall, supermarket, and other retail channels | Convenience-store and third-party ATM locations | Convenience-store app, POS, and partner ATM rollout | Convenience-store POS, ATM, and service terminals |
| Finance entity integration | Broad AEON financial-services group | Bank-centered group with card and settlement subsidiaries | Wallet and partner-card model; bank infrastructure is partnered | Lawson Bank plus KDDI-side products under joint ownership |
| Governance fact | Listed group structure | Bank deconsolidated from Seven & i in 2025 | FamilyMart privatized in 2020 | Lawson final 50/50 ownership completed in 2024 |
| Cross-group dependency | Product-specific within AEON entities | Seven Bank serves group and non-group locations | Relies on Pocket Card and Seven Bank for named layers | Relies on both Lawson entities and KDDI-side services |

The table supports structural comparison only. It does not establish which configuration has the lowest customer-acquisition cost, highest conversion, largest profit pool, best data, or strongest competitive moat.

## Claims deliberately excluded

- unsourced store dwell-time and basket-size ranges;
- unverified ATM or partner counts copied across years;
- hypothetical exclusive-wallet negotiations;
- assumptions about point-liability accounting without entity financial statements;
- claims that a 50/50 owner can access all customer data;
- claims that a planned bank-agency application is already approved;
- forecasts that cashless growth necessarily helps or harms one group; and
- rankings such as “largest,” “best,” or “most defensible” without dated comparable measures.

## Reusable review workflow

Sources for the following checklist table: [Seven Bank's shareholder list](https://www.sevenbank.co.jp/english/ir/stock/stock_info.html), [FamilyMart's current payment directory](https://www.family.co.jp/services/payment.html), and [KDDI's Lawson partnership announcement](https://newsroom.kddi.com/english/news/detail/kddi_pr_secret-79.html).

| Step | Question | Minimum evidence |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Which legal entity owns or operates the product? | Company outline, subsidiary list, or product agreement |
| 2 | Is the relationship consolidated, equity method, partnership, or acceptance only? | Latest annual results and transaction disclosure |
| 3 | Is the status launched, rolling out, planned, or merely considered? | Dated implementation release |
| 4 | Which permission applies? | Regulator register or the entity's permission disclosure |
| 5 | Is a metric current and comparable? | Same-date, same-definition primary data |
| 6 | Does a claim involve customer-data use? | Current privacy notice, consent, and joint-use disclosure |
